Tip: If prayer is comfortable for you, I recommend doing so briefly before starting the meditation. Call out the name you use to represent your higher power, and simply feel yourself surrender. Don't ask for anything specific. He/She/That knows what you need. If prayer doesn't feel natural for you, it's okay; just ignore this tip. The meditation will work either way.
You're simply bringing your attention to the feeling of existence and leaving your focus only on that. Let any other thoughts or feelings that come up just pass you by. Don't engage the mind chatter. If your mind drifts to other thoughts, there's no need to feel angry; it's normal. Simply pull your attention back to the most natural sense a human has -- the sense of existing -- without attaching to any thing or label.
"Try to be, only to be. The all-important word is 'try'. Allot enough time daily for sitting quietly and trying, just trying, to go beyond the personality, with its addictions and obsessions.
